Sky Orchestra
OPENED SYDNEY FESTIVAL 2007
LAUNCHED COUNTDOWN TO LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS
Sydney, Bristol, Derry, London, Stratford-upon-Avon (RSC commission), Yverdon: music
Sky Orchestra is a large scale outdoor art installation in collaboration with visual artist Luke Jerram, featuring a multichannel surround sound score by Dan Jones. The project involves a group of seven hot air balloons, each fitted with speakers. These balloons take flight over a city at dawn or dusk, with each broadcasting a different part of the overall musical composition. This produces an immensely specialised soundscape and a layered composition that differs depending on the position of the person hears it. The project aims to deliver a musical experience from the sky to individuals within their homes, which was especially apt when the balloons launched for their performance in the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020.
Sky Orchestra was chosen to open the Sydney Festival in 2007 and has been commissioned for performances in London, Bristol, Derry (UK City of Culture 2013) and by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.
